Government has lifted travel restrictions for passengers travelling between South Tarawa and Betio and several outer islands which already have COVID-19 community transmission such as Makin, Abaiang, North Tarawa, Aranuka and Abemama effective from Saturday 26th February 2022.
This new decision is in addition to the current measures in place under the Alert Level 3 for South Tarawa, Betio, Buota and Butaritari in response to the requests received from these islands to allow staff, students and those stranded in Tarawa to return to their workplaces and to their families.
Under this new order, the approval of the Island Council must reach the Office of Te Beretitenti before travels are allowed between South Tarawa, Betio and the island. Passengers of 18 years and over must have been fully vaccinated before they can travel. Vessel operators must ensure that this requirement is followed. Other SOP requirements in relation to traveling must also be followed by passengers and crews.
The Government is pleased to advise that approvals from Island Councils of Makin, Abaiang, North Tarawa, Aranuka and Abemama have been received, hence travel can commence between South Tarawa and Betio and the outer island. The remaining islands will remain as usual until a new decision is made.
