The Government has decided to extend the lockdown period on South Tarawa, Betio and Buota for 7 more days effective from 6am Friday 28 January 2022 to 6am Friday 4 February 2022. Furthermore, Te Beretitenti has also signed the extension of the Proclamation of a State Disaster to prepare for and manage the impact of novel corona virus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic for another 30 days effective from Saturday 29 January 2022 to 28 February 2022, following the first proclamation made on 22 January 2022.
Noting that South Tarawa, Betio and Buota are still on alert level three, the following measures are still in effect:
Delivery of cargoes, fuels and medical supplies by vessel or air service will continue to the outer islands with no passengers allowed. Only those stranded in the outer islands are allowed to return to Tarawa provided they meet health travel requirements. No travels between the outer islands are allowed.
1. Lock-down with 24 hours curfew.
2. All Government Offices and SOEs will be closed and work remotely from home, except for essential and emergency services.

• Wholesalers and retailers selling food and essential items including Kiribati Copra Development Limited
• Ministry of Finance and Economic Development

• Public Broadcasting Authority
• Public Utilities Board
• Kiribati Meteorological Service
• Ministry of Women, Youth, Sport and Social Affairs
• Ministry of Information, Communication and Transport
• Shipping and Aviation service providers
• Kiribati Red Cross Society
• Kiribati Family Health Association
• Kiribati Fish Limited (KFL)
• Central Pacific Producers Limited (CPPL)
3. And other essential services that the Government deems necessary during the lockdown. These additional services require prior approval of Office of Te Beretitenti.
4. All essential service providers (food wholesale and retail) from the private sector will remain open to the public from 6am to 2pm.
5. People MUST stay at home – may only leave their homes for essential work or to access emergency services.
6. Access to shops for food shopping and other essential services will be zoned to limit the movement of people within their neighbourhoods or villages from 6am to 2pm. Movement to other villages requires prior approval of the Office of Te Beretitenti.
7. Fishing during shopping hours from 6am to 2pm is hereby allowed and that fishing boats or net fishing near shore is restricted to a group of 4 or a maximum of 4 crew for fishing boats. All fishing boats are not allowed to visit other villages or islands apart from their point of origin.
8. Public transportation services will cease during the lockdown.
9. All kava bars, liquor bars, and night clubs will be closed.
10. All kinds of social gatherings are banned.
11. Access to hospital services will be conducted according to the Ministry of Health and Medical Service guidelines as earlier announced.

Update for Buota
The 10 days lockdown of Buota is now uplifted, however, people’s movement in and out of Buota will be restricted like the rest of South Tarawa. This means that those wishing to enter or leave Buota for work or for other essential purposes will need to obtain a pass from the Office of Te Beretitenti (OB), similar with the movement of people between containment zones such as Betio to Bairiki.
In addition to the above, an EFTPOS machine will be made available in Buota for those needing to withdraw cash or for purchasing essential needs.
The public is advised to continue to strictly follow the Ministry of Health and Medical Services Standard Operational Procedures and comply with the curfew order to safeguard themselves and their families from this pandemic.
All requests for this weekend (Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th of January) passes are to reach the Office of the Beretitenti before 4pm on Friday 28th January 2022. For Companies, Businesses, Ministries and Diplomatic Missions whose requests have been approved this week, these will be extended for the curfew period.
